University of Arkansas, FayettevilleThe Position: The College of Education and Health Professions at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, invites nominations and applications for a tenure-track position of Assistant Professor in Higher Education in the Department of Rehabilitation, Human Resources and Communication Disorders.
The College: The College of Education and Health Professions offers degrees at the undergraduate and graduate level with more than 3,100 students pursuing coursework both on-campus and off-campus. The College is comprised of five academic units based in six buildings on the Fayetteville campus with academic centers in Little Rock and Hot Springs. More than 200 faculty and staff are helping the College achieve its three broad strategic goals: excellence in teaching, research and service; growth in enrollment and increased diversity; and increased public and private support.
The Program: We are a 46-year-old professional preparation program that has a reputation for good students, high standards, excellent faculty-student relations, and a desire to continually improve. Our mission is to graduate doctoral, educational specialist, and master's degree students who come from diverse backgrounds and who are characterized by their competence and confidence to be effective leaders in the American higher education workplace. As one of the largest doctoral programs in the College, we have maintained a consistent, planned enrollment of approximately 40 students. Additionally, we house a very strong master's program of about 50 students, almost all of whom have graduate assistantships. Our masters program actively recruits and brings to campus a nationally representative cohort of approximately 18-22 students each fall, with the majority selecting an emphasis in College Student Affairs Administration. Most of our doctoral students are full-time employees of academic institutions in Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Missouri and take six credit hours a semester. Our graduates occupy major leadership positions in two- and four-year colleges throughout the nation. A full-time faculty of 3.5 FTE, assisted by several university administrators, work with these students. Collectively, the faculty has published 30 books and over 400 refereed journal articles.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to: (1) interest in, and desire to assume responsibility for continued development and teaching a combination of the following courses: History and Philosophy of Higher Education, Management Skills for Effective Leadership, Leading Change, Governance and Policy Making in Higher Education, Finance and Financial Management in Higher Education, Individual and Group Management Skills, Management Concepts Applied to Higher Education Institutions, the Student in Higher Education, Strategies for Effective College Teaching, Instructional Design, the Professoriate, and a willingness and ability to help (as needed) with internship supervision and student recruitment; (2) teach four-six of the courses listed above (two each term, four different courses per year, not including summer); (3) conduct research (alone or with others, including students) related to postsecondary education that results in publications in refereed journals; (4) advise and mentor masters and doctoral students of diverse cultures and backgrounds; (5) upon request, provide professional leadership and service to community colleges and universities; (6) be an active participant in course and program development; (7) engage in appropriate service activities at the department, college or university level; and (8) in conjunction with students and colleagues, write either research and/or service grant proposals.
Required Qualifications: The individual selected for this position will be expected to possess the following required qualifications:
1. An earned doctorate from a nationally recognized university in higher education, or related discipline.
2. Evidence of ability to be an effective teacher at the graduate level in classes containing highly qualified, experienced faculty and administrators from colleges and universities.
3. Sufficient expertise in quantitative and qualitative research methodology to supervise doctoral dissertations.
4. A clear personal research agenda, preferably evident through previous lines of inquiry.
Preferred Qualifications: Preference will be given to candidates who possess the following:
1. Prior experience in securing extramural funding for research or service.
2. Collaborative research in higher education setting with others (students, colleagues in education, the social sciences, or business).
3. A record of respected professional service to colleges and universities in his/her areas of expertise (including presentations at state and national conferences).
4. Active involvement in appropriate higher educational organizations.Appointment and Salary: This is a 9-month, tenure-track position at the assistant professor rank. The salary will be competitive and commensurate with experience and background. Contingent on available funding and demand, an additional summer appointment is possible.
Starting Date: The anticipated starting date is August 18, 2008 (Fall 2008 Semester).
The Area: The University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, is located in the rapidly growing northwestern corner of the state (approximate metropolitan population of over 400,000 residents). Fayetteville is a hilly, heavily forested city of approximately 70,000 surrounded by a number of towns ranging in size from 2,000 to over 40,000. The University is situated at a 1,400-foot elevation in the beautiful Boston Mountains of Northwest Arkansas. Fayetteville offers many of the advantages of an urban setting (shopping, restaurants, healthcare, entertainment, public parks and lakes) while maintaining the natural beauty of clear streams and clean air. In addition, to excellent hunting, fishing, golf, canoeing, hiking, and biking, the surrounding area is well-known for its many small farms, orchards, and forest lands and is free of large industrial pollution. Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport operates approximately 60 flights per day with direct jet service to Dallas, Memphis, St. Louis, Chicago, Atlanta, New York, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, Miami, Cincinnati, Minneapolis, and Houston. There is a wide-range of readily available housing ranging 2-3 bedroom apartments to single family homes from the mid $80s to over $400,000. The area public schools rank at the top in the state and regularly graduate many merit scholars. Fayetteville has been featured in numerous publications as a very desirable and economical place to live and most recently was listed by Money magazine as one of the "100 Best Places to Live." We believe few university communities are equal in total environment, including opportunities for personal enrichment and enjoyable living.
